Choreography vs Improvisation:
Which do you prefer and why?

I love and use both as they compliment each other in the creative process of building pieces. I use improvisation and freestyle skills to build my choreography and set movement onto the music used in any given project. Choreography allows for a fuller understanding, exploration, and connection between the movement choices and the sounds/stories heard in music. This depth of musicality allows dancers to polish the final product and simultaneously progress abilities in their execution/performance-quality with practice. It also provides clarity for viewers and audiences allowing them to increase their connection and appreciation of the performance/music.

What draws you to making dance film?

The idea of bringing life to a visual representation of the music draws me in. Dance films allow you to go on a journey (to “see the music”) through a specific perspective and take a deeper dive into the connected experience of dance and film working together. My creative mind resonates with the endless possibilities, options, and choices when filming, planning, editing the projects, and piecing them all together. I find each step of the process (from rehearsals, to being on set, and all the way to the released video) to be soulfully energizing, although challenging, and I learn so much every time I work on a new creation. Imagine having fun…
