Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies

Come join us for a Hoop Dance workshop hosted by Cree and Salteaux Hoop Dancer Jay Genaille! A member of the Cowessess First Nation, Jay is a professional Hoop Dancer and Storyteller, mentored by 3x World Champion Dallas Arcand Sr. Recently, Jay performed at the South Island Powwow on September 30th, 2023.

As a survivor of Intergenerational Trauma, Jay's hope is to inspire Indigenous youth to reconnect back to culture as a way of healing. He tells his story through his Hoop Dance, using anywhere between 5 -18 hoops. His storytelling includes speaking about Hoop Dancing, the medicine wheel and his journey as an Indigenous man reconnecting back to his Indigenous identity.
