Meet Showcase Performer: Unapologetic Dance

The inception of Unapologetic Dance Company was driven by a profound need to create a space where artists could embrace their true selves without reservation. As an Afro-Indigenous and LGBTQ+ artist, Kahvontay Slaughter, the collective’s founder, executive producer, and artistic director, struggled to find his place in the arts world without experiencing marginalization. Determined to create change, he established Unapologetic Dance Company in Toronto as a sanctuary for artists to express themselves authentically, regardless of their background. In this space, stories of vulnerability, resilience, and empowerment are told through dance.

Our work is also deeply influenced by the lived experiences of our members. These personal narratives are at the core of our artistic output, creating work that reflects not only the diversity of our community but the strength found in collective resilience. Through our performances, we strive to inspire artists and audiences alike to embrace their authenticity, break away from societal expectations, and celebrate diversity. By staying true to our vision, Unapologetic Dance Company continues to push the boundaries of contemporary dance, fostering a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the human experience.
